SPARK FIELDHOUSE
Hard To Kill.

How old is your body, really?

One hour. Ten tests. You walk out with your Hard To Kill Score, your physical age, and a written plan, graded against adults your age and sex.

Your doctor checks your blood work every year. Nobody checks whether you can still carry your bags, catch a stumble or get up off the floor. We do.

Inside your Hard To Kill Report

The numbers that predict how well you'll live.

The same depth of reporting our Sports Med Combine athletes get, rebuilt for adults who intend to stay capable for decades. Four pages. Every number explained.

Your Hard To Kill Score

One number out of 100. Every test is scored against people your age and sex and weighted by how strongly it predicts survival. Vulnerable, Holding, Strong or Hard To Kill.

Every test, graded and explained

Where you land against your peers, the research behind the test in plain English, and exactly what to do next: train it with WELL or treat it with CARE.

Where you're heading

Your grip plotted against the population curve, and the age you reach the muscle-loss zone if nothing changes. Then what changes if you train.

When a result is linked to survival, we tell you straight. Adults 51 to 75 who could not hold a 10-second single-leg stance had 84% higher risk of death over seven years. Araujo et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2022

Why test at all

Decline is quiet until it isn't.

Your labs get checked. Your legs don't.

Cholesterol, A1C and blood pressure get tracked for decades. Leg strength, balance and grip predict how long you stay independent, and almost nobody measures them.

It slips a little every year.

Strength and balance fade after 50 so gradually you don't feel it. Then a curb, a ladder or a grandchild tests you, and it shows up as a fall instead of a number.

A score with no plan is trivia.

Plenty of places will hand you a number. We tell you what it means for someone your age and exactly what to train next.

Who's behind it

The best, without the wait.

You run a practice, a company, a household. You don't need another app or a crowded gym. You need someone who knows exactly what to measure, tells you the truth about the results, and gets you in this week.

Designed by Dr. Carlos J. Berio, DPT

A Doctor of Physical Therapy who has led SPARK's direct-access practice in Alexandria since 2009, specializing in pain, movement science and long-term performance. He built the Centenarian Decathlon and personally trains the clinicians who run it.

Measured against your peers

Every result is graded against adults your age and sex using published research. You see where you stand today and what it predicts for the next twenty years.

On your calendar, this week

One hour, one-on-one, booked around your schedule. Members keep a standing slot with the same clinician every time, and priority access when something flares up.

The ten events

Each one predicts something that matters.

Strength, balance, power, core, engine and composition. Skip anything that doesn't feel right; someone from our Hard To Kill team is with you the whole hour.

01

Grip strengthStrength

Squeeze a dynamometer, best effort with each hand.

In a study of nearly 140,000 adults across 17 countries, every 5 kg drop in grip went with a 16% higher risk of death.

Leong et al., The Lancet, 2015
02

Single-leg stanceBalance

Hands on hips, one foot up, eyes open.

Adults 51 to 75 who couldn't hold it for 10 seconds had nearly twice the risk of dying over the next seven years.

Araujo et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2022
03

30-second sit-to-standLegs

Arms crossed, full stands from a standard chair, as many as you can in 30 seconds.

The CDC uses this test to flag fall risk. A below-average count for your age is a warning light.

CDC STEADI; Jones et al., 1999
04

Standing long jumpPower

Both feet behind the line, swing, jump, measured to the heels.

Power fades faster than strength with age, and power is what catches a stumble.

05

Farmer's carryStrength

Heavy weight in each hand, walk tall until we say stop.

Groceries, luggage, a grandchild. Total-body strength and grip endurance in one test.

06

Dead hangStrength

Hang from a bar with arms long for as long as you can.

Grip, shoulder health and upper-body resilience.

07

PlankCore

Forearm plank, body in a straight line, as long as you can hold it.

Core endurance protects your back and your posture.

08

Lateral holdCore

Side plank on each side without letting the hips drop.

Side-to-side core strength supports your spine and your balance.

09

Body compositionComposition

Hold the scanner for a few seconds.

Muscle you carry versus fat you store. Muscle is what keeps you independent.

10

Engine: Echo BikeEngine

Arms and legs, all out, until you burn 15 calories. We time it.

Cardio fitness is one of the strongest predictors of survival. In 122,007 adults, low fitness carried a risk of death as high as or higher than smoking, diabetes or heart disease.

Mandsager et al., JAMA Network Open, 2018

Enough already. Get better or stay the same.

Who is this for?

Adults 40 and up who want to know where they actually stand. Fit, out of shape, or coming back from an injury, you're welcome.

Do I have to do every event?

No. Skip anything that doesn't feel right. Someone from our Hard To Kill team is with you the whole hour and will scale or swap any test.

What does it cost?

What happens with my results?

You leave with your scorecard. If something needs attention, we'll tell you what to do about it, whether you train with us or not.
